Travel with Tara : Mirjan Fort, India
An unplanned visit to the Mirjan Fort! @droidsid and I decided to go on a small vacation to Lonavala near Mumbai, India. We travelled all the way from Mangalore, my hometwown, to Lonavala and on the way I saw a sign post that said Mirjan Fort and I wanted to check it out.
The Fort is located near the west coast of India, about 212 km from Mangalore.
The Fort was built in the 16th century and later refurbished in the 17th century. There are many versions as to who built the fort initially, the Nayawath Sultantes or the Vijayanagar Empire. To learn more about the history of the fort you can Click the Wikipedia link here.
That's what the fort looks like when you first see it. The Indian Flag was hoisted that day because it was the Republic Day(26th, January). Great day to visit such an architecturally beautiful fort!
The Fort is built over an area of about 10 acres. That's pretty huge! It has a few underground passages and secret ways, which are restricted to the public, of course.
The Fort is located on the banks of the Aganashini river and is only a few kilometers away from the Arabian Sea.
The pathway leads to the top part of the fort.
