Phrae is a province that people may overlook because it is a gateway to other popular provinces in the North of Thailand. Even though it's small, I can say that it's a charming province.

In my opinion, Phrae is just as cute as other provinces in the North of Thailand. It is an ancient province with legends and historical traces. There are also rich natural resources that can be visited all year round.

Actually, what attracts travelers to visit Phrae is its simplicity that is full of various charms.

Local people in Phrae have a simple and slow life.

Phrae is a small province where you can travel around downtown in 1 day. The atmosphere is calm, not busy like in big cities.

If you visit Phrae, I would suggest you to try taking a walk or cycling around downtown to experience the ways of life of local people and their houses by yourself.

There are some interesting photos to share….

As stated in part of the sign below:

“The old city wall of Phrae or it’s called “Mek” by local people is an ancient archaeological site of Phrae since the province was built.

The city wall of Phrae is a single layer wall filled with soil, making it pile up like a small ridge. Using large bricks made in that period and stones built into the interior to prevent soil erosion.

The purpose of building the city wall is to protect against enemies in times of war and prevent the Yom River from flooding houses.”

This city wall is considered an important thing used to find historical traces and evidence and they should be preserved for the next generations.

You can walk along the ridge of the wall and see the beautiful scenery of the canal, the wonderful mountains range, nice natural surroundings and the city as well.

There used to be a man-made canal around the city which local people call “Nam Kue”. (you will find a sign of Nam Kue in the Thai language in the photos below.)

It’s unfortunate that, at present, only part of the canal remains.

Phrae is well-known as “the city of Tung”.

Tung is a symbol and identity that indicates the meaning of happiness, luck, and victory for people in the northern part of Thailand.

In various traditional events of northern people, there is always Tung involved.

Not only the ancient things, there are also modern graffities on the wall along the canal.

They have awesome designs in bright colors which can attract people’s eyes.

Last but not least, most people who visit Phrae love to stop by at Saenchai Shrine which has Chinese architecture.

The roof has a marvelous pattern and the golden dragon pillars contrast with the bright red color of the shrine.

It’s beautiful, outstanding and eye-catching indeed.

Actually, most people come to ask for prosperity in life.

I can say that traveling to Phrae will not disappoint you.
