"And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above."
Bastile, Pompeii

This world wonder I visited in 2015 while I was staying in Naples for 3 days. I went to Pompeii with a train from Naples, called Circum Vesuviana, which can be translated from Italian as "circle around Vesuvius", which means the train drives entirely around the volcano and back, stopping at every village.

Pompeii is a small town which rises on a plateau of Vesuvian lava and it was an ally of ancient Rome. It was destroyed by a volcano eruption on August 24th, 79 AD.

Mount Vesuvius literally blew of his top off and spew ash, rocks and poison gas in the atmosphere. Besides Pompeii, also another town was destroyed - Herculaneum or in Italian, Ercolano. These have been progressively excavated and made accessible to the public since the mid-18th century.

2000 years ago, the citizens of Pompeii didn't even know they live next to an active volcano. With lack of knowledge and technology, they thought it's just another mountain.

The whole city is separated into neighbourhoods for easier orientation. The streets have visible cartwheel traces and some houses still have untouched wall paintings. While walking through the buildings, you will be able to recognize the bath buildings, a brothel, food canteen, bakery with water basins and ovens, temples dedicated to Gods etc.

The most-visited building on the site is the brothel with some explicit erotic paintings and a lot of graffiti from satisfied customers.

In the gladiator arena are exposed the remaining skeletons that were excavated from the ashes. The most interesting fact is that they still have clothes, flesh and teeth after almost 2000 years.

The Vesuvius volcano is still in it's active phase and a new eruption would evacuate the whole area inhabitated by 3 million people.
