Hemis monastery is a tranquil and offbeat place situated in the northernmost part of India in the district of Ladakh.
Ladakh or "the land of high passes" is itself offbeat and a preferred adventure destination. Ladakh is a district in the india state of Jammu & Kashmir inhabited by people who are mix race of Mongols, Dards & Tibetians.
In Ladakh lies Hemis monastery surrounded by snow capped mountains all around. Hemis is one of the wealthiest monasteries of India boasting a huge collection of Buddhist artifacts and relics. The serene and tranquil ambiance here attracts a lot of tourists from around the globe but still the footfall is low enough for someone to get away from the hustle-bustle of a city. The monastery comes to life in the month of June to celebrate the yearly Hemis Festival. The 2 days festival commemorates the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhav.
