Danube Gorges ("Cazanele")
Beautiful region where the Danube crosses the mountains on its path toward the sea.
Because here the river is at its narrowest, the region figures in history - first as the place where the Roman legions of Emperor Trajan have crossed to the North to conquer the Dacian Kingdom of King Decebal. The latter's figure has been carved in stone here as a kind of Romanian "Mt. Rushmore".
Second in skirmishes between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires in the XVII-th and XVIII-th centuries (the cave in the picture sheltered a small Austrian garrison).
Finally, as one of the favorite places where Romanians were crossing the river at night to escape the "proletarian paradise" of Nicolae Ceauşescu .
The cave in your second picture is called Ponicova, and on the other side it is open and accessible even for kids... You can visit it, and it's a perfect place to show your kids a cave untouched by humans.
Indeed, the one with the garrison is close by, Veterani
Un concediu placut si multe impliniri alaturi de familie, e cel mai important.

Beautiful family 😊
And the rock face, it is just breath taking 👌
Thanks. :-)
Interesting history too. Took 10 years to carve. Paid for by a local "mécène ", said to have costed 1 million dollars
