New Zealand trip part 1: animals of Doubtful Sound
My favorite part of the New Zealand trip that I took in January 2016 was the daytrip to Doubtful sound and night visit to the Te Anau glowworm caves. We left our motel at 7 AM in the morning on a coach to Lake Manapouri where we hopped on the ferry to take us to Wilmont's Pass. This is known as the most expensive road in New Zealand. Finally, we got on another bus which took us to Doubtful Sound and then embarked on a tour around the beautiful Sound. Most tourists choose to go to Milford Sound but my friends recommended this tour instead. I am glad we took their advice since I love wildlife and was thrilled to see these animals!
Why is it called Doubtful Sound? Captain James Cook was doubtful that he would be able to get out of the Sound so he didn't enter it.
(Bottlenose dolphins)
(Seals)
(Seal eating eel)
We saw three bottlenose dolphins, including a baby one, as well as many seals. One of them was eating an eel! It rains 200 days a year at Doubtful Sound, so we were so blessed to have a warm sunny day and calm waters.
The glow worms were equally amazing; we had to duck into a cave filled with gushing water to board a small boat. We floated upon the water in complete silence and gazed up at the shining lights above us, it was like a myriad of stars in the sky. We were not allowed to take photos inside the cave.
All photos taken with my Canon 7D with Canon 50 mm f1.8 lens. Cropped and edited slightly in Photoshop to brighten up the photos and make it a bit more saturated. I lost my lens cap on this trip...
