Five thousand years ago, on the central plains of Bulgaria, near the Rhodope Mountains, the tribes of the ancient Thracians lived, which many researchers call the first civilization of Europe.

Plovdiv - one of the oldest cities in Europe, older than Rome and Athens, a contemporary of Troy and Mycenae, which the Thracians called Eumolpia. And in 342 Philip, the father of Alexander of Macedon, captured the city and gave him his name, which I put in my collage.

At that time, many temples, schools, and even a stadium were built. For 72 years before the beginning of the new era, Roman legionaries took possession of Philipolis and annexed him, like the rest of Thrace, to his empire.

In the city until now you will see the ruins of the acropolis of ancient Trimontium, located on 3 hills. Since this is the oldest part of the city, here there are buildings of various epochs: Thracian walls, medieval buildings, ruins of Turkish mosques and much more.

And the dervishes from the Order of the dancing ascetic monks, who were also called "mevlevi", still live today in the Monastery complex called Mevlevi Khane.

And this is the Dzhumai mosque - the main Muslim temple of Plovdiv. It was built here by the Turks in the middle of the 14th century on the site of the cathedral of St. Petka Tyrnovskaya. It is believed that this mosque is one of the largest and oldest Islamic constructions in the Balkans.

You will be able to taste amazing dishes in this country: chicken burek - stuffed pepper, baked in batter, gyuvech - meat, cheese and vegetables in pots, layered, slab in Selsk - lamb liver with rice, and millet banitza.
