City of Zagreb in Croatia

Zagreb, the largest city in Croatia and its capital. Together with the suburbs, more than 1 million people live in it.

Zagreb is located on the left bank of the Sava River - the tributary of the Danube, in the north-west of the country, and its history dates back more than 900 years.

This is the building of the Zagreb Cathedral, which is considered to be one of the best examples of Gothic architecture. The Church of St. Mark, built in the middle of the XIII century, is famous for its mosaic roof made of tiles of different colors.

The first mention of Zagreb dates back to 1094, when the Hungarian King Laszlo I established a bishopric in a settlement on the hill Kaptol. At that time, the settlements of Hradec and Kaptol, now part of the historical core of the city of Zagreb, were two independent settlements.

At the beginning of the 17th century, Hradec and Kaptol finally merged into one city, and the bishopric of Kaptol was renamed the archbishopric of Zagreb.

Zagreb is in the center of a wide-spread transport network. Large modern highways run from the city in the direction to the east, towards Slavonia, Belgrade and Osijek.

To the north of the famous Bana Jelacic Square is located this Dolac market. Come here in the morning, and your attention will be presented to fresh fruits, vegetables and fish from the coast. And if you go up the hill to the street Tkalchicheva, then you will be waiting for the open doors of numerous souvenir shops of craftsmen from all over the country.

Trams are very popular in Zagreb, some routes work even at night, when other types of public transport can no longer be used. In addition, on Tomíč Street in Zagreb, the old cable car begins.

One of the most remarkable museums in Zagreb is the Mimara Museum. In his collection more than 3700 works of art, from antiquity to the present day.

In Zagreb there are many unusual museums, one of them is the museum of the school. The Croatian education system is a real pride of this country. In the museum you can find out what the city school was 100 years ago, see old desks, boards and educational supplies.

There is an original museum dedicated to divorce in the city. It is also called a museum of broken relationships. Here you can see love letters and cards, wedding rings and wedding accessories. Behind each of these museum exhibits is a dramatic love and breakaway story.
And, surprisingly, this museum is one of the most visited places in Zagreb.

Croatia is often called a hunting country, so it's no surprise that there is a special hunting museum in Zagreb, where weapons, stuffed animals, baits and traps are exhibited.

There are many here and beautiful squares. It is a view of the Square of Ban Josip Jelacic from the street Ilitsa - the main place for meetings of the inhabitants of Zagreb.

I remember this cathedral. He is very tall, handsome, attracting attention from afar. The full name of the cathedral is the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary and Saints Stefan and Vladislav, but briefly it is called - St. Stephen's Cathedral.

In Zagreb there lived many famous people, such as Nikola Tesla and Slavoljub Penkala, who invented a fountain pen, patented a thermos, and built in 1910 the first Croatian airplane.

And on Tkalcicheva Street there is a house with hussars on the facade, they are shown to all tourist groups coming to Zagreb.

But because of such souvenirs that are encountered at every step, the city seemed to me red, and also because many people go here in such national costumes and with amazing umbrellas.

As for local delicacies, the city sells chocolate with hot pepper, truffles, traditional gingerbread and jam from dry figs.

In Croatia, there are 700 varieties of wine. As a good snack for locally produced wine, a spicy cheese called "pashki" (it is aged for 6 months in olive oil) is suitable.
