Misty morning drive

Mist hung over most of the Southern Suburbs this morning, stretching from Muizenberg in the South to Milnerton in the North Western side of Cape Town. Our church is in Boston so we have a 25 minute drive on the highways every Sunday.

This area in the photo is called Parkwood and it has been in the news over the last week. A peaceful demonstration about land claims turned into a riot, turned into 2 gangs coming together and shooting at law enforcement. Tyres were stacked on this road and set on fire. The road was only just resurfaced in January and is now pock-marked where the heat melted the tar. The road had been closed in both directions ( it is a split highway) for over a week.

All was quiet this morning.

We actually used to live right there, just across the road in Southfield, the street even opens up to the highway and many use it as a through road to get to the train station. We would often hear gunshots as the gangs settled their disputes over a couple of rounds of ammo.

Today the property at the end of the road had crime scene tape across the entrance.
On this property there are big trees, lots of old cars and a small caravan ( camper van) The house, if there had indeed ever been one, long gone. One of the cars is home to Jesse, self proclaimed guardian of the street. He lived there with his dad. Before we moved away he had managed to get a job as a night guard at a transportation depo.
What happened to them? Was it police who put the crime scene tape there? Or did Jesse get hold of some and put it up hinself as a way to scare off intruders? It is the kind of thing he would do.

I didn't take a photo.

We drove on, with Devils Peak at our left, heading North and eventually curving right, with the Devils Peak now behind us changing into the view of Table Mountain so universally known. Walls of shipping containers forming islands in their own right on both sides of the highway.

This us my country, my home. Beautiful, fiercely contrasting. I am going to miss it.

( just some melancholy ramblings. Don't feel obliged to comment)

Hope you have a good week

those misty pictures are something else. Very cool to hear about your life. The states look like a violent place, I don’t know if I could stomach it.
Cheers and all the love friend!

Good shoot brother
