Thailand Adventures - Part 1 - Kanchanaburi and the bridge over the River Kwai

Kanchanaburi and the bridge over the River Kwai

Our adventure through Thailand began in Bangkok. We purchased a tour that would take us around the Nort-West region of the country and our first stop was Kanchanaburi. This area is steeped in history, particularly for WWII historians as there were a large number of Australian POW's that died in this area in the construction of the Burma Railway during the war.

Our visit started with a stop at the sombre war cemetery in the region where many Australians were laid to rest.

Next we visited the famous 'Bridge over the River Kwai'.

We also caught the train towards the Myanmar border to visit the famous Hellfire Pass which is a very sacred site for Australians.

Much of the railway was carved by hand and the viaducts still exist in most places and are still used as part of the active railway line.

This pass was carved by hand drilling holes and dynamiting the solid rock. The rock was then removed by hand with wheelbarrows before the track could be laid.

This is a wonderful part of the world to visit and one I would recommend to everyone.

Thanks for reading

Very nice mate, great pics. We will definitely go there on our next visit. That sign by the young and bloody proud Australian really hits the mark.

Another great post on your travel series Scooter.

Thanks Choo. And did you notice the Steemit world map locale?

Grr! Tried replying to this, and now my original comment has been reposted and I can't delete it. Fucking steemit.com. Piece of shit. 😈

Anyway, what I was trying to say is do you mean you put the code into your post, or are you talking about something else.

Yes the code. And thanks for commenting twice on the post. !

Oh now, it's decided to let me delete it.

Heya, just swinging by to let you know you're being featured in our Daily Travel Digest Post!

I actually barely knew anything of Thailand's involvement during WWII, so thanks for giving me a different outlook on that part of history!

Thanks that’s great. Finally made it after @choogirl’s friendly advice!

@choogirl is amazing for spreading the word about the map everywhere she goes, haha!

Thanks for the bot you send my way by the way, appreciate it!

Wow @scooter77 what amazing imagery. Hellfire Pass just screams suffering when you visualise the effort and struggle required of those POWs to construct it. I've been to Thailand but not this area. How did the visit make you feel having seen it in the flesh?

It is a very sombre place and if you take a moment when in the cutting you can actually see the scrape marks and effort that went into the construction. So many lives and suffering went into constructing something that seems so simple in todays world. If you have never been to a war cemetery then it is a must do to pay your respects. This was a small cemetery and it still contains a lot of graves.

You paint a breathtaking picture.

Awesome work! I've been always curious about Thailand and surrounding. Thank you for giving this opportunity to have a virtual journey!

Congratulations, Your Post Has Been Added To The Steemit Worldmap!
