Aussie’s in the USA - Part 4 - Hawaii - Diamond Head State Moument and Hanauma Bay
Diamond Head State Monument
Diamond Head is an extinct volcanic crater that stands to the east of Waikiki beach on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. The park is famous as an Hawaiian state monument and dominates the skyline of Honolulu.
Starting early, we decided to head to the famous crater that is Diamond Head State Monument and walk the trail to the top of the crater.
Entrance to the park is through a tunnel that has been bored through the crater rim and once inside we paid $5 for a carload and got ready to make the 1.6 mile (return) trek to the summit of the crater.
We decided to start early as it is notoriously hot and dehydration can be a common issue on the trek.
The track was slippery in parts and our youngest (who is 4 yrs old) walked the whole way up and back.
The track traverses through a bunker that is built into the crater rim and has breathtaking views at various stages along its entire length.
Hanauma Bay
Hanauma Bay is another well known place to visit in Hawaii. It lies on the south-eastern tip of the Island of Oahu and contains a vibrant reef with a multitude of different fish species. It costs $7.50 per adult to enter the Bay Area and you must undergo a mandatory 10 minute video that outlines the importance of the bay and the does and don’t when snorkelling in the bay.
We took a few sets of snorkelling equipment purchased from Walmart and hit the water after our video led instructions.
The coral was not the most spectacular that I had ever seen but the fish life was unbelievable. This is definitely a spot worth visiting.

Nice one Scooter. You're reminding me of all the places I went to. I didn't think Hanauma Bay was that great. Snorkelling on Maui and the Big Island was a thousand times better.
