Wandering Memories #6: Five Star Hotel for FREE?! The Bay of Abandoned Hotels

in #travel7 years ago

We arrived in Dubrovnik after dark. However, we didn't decide to spend the night there. We took a city bus and got off to Kupari, a village 5 km away from Dubrovnik, heading towards a huge recreational-hotelary complex located on the beach....

We were led to the place by a charming Croatian girl. Kupari is not an ordinary hotel complex, because... it is a completely abandoned. It was a facility reserved for the military and was completely destroyed by artillery from the sea and land by Serbs and Montenegrins in '90 during the Croatian war of independce.

There are 9 large, modern (for those days), luxurious, multi-storey and completley abandoned hotels - it was the most luxurious recreational complex in Yugoslavia. It is not without reason that they call this place The Bay of Abandoned Hotels. We made some night exploration using flashlights, which gave us a lot of fun. We have seen three or four of the most important hotels.

We climbed onto the roof of the most majestic of them. We decided to spend the night there. The roof area was huge and the view of hundreds of colorful lights was magical. We listened to music, drank two-litre bottles Karlovackos and just had a good time talking about a thousand things.

Before bedtime we started to play with the camera and long exposure, which gave quite nice results in the form of the bright words :) We almost managed to write "autostop" (which means "hitch-hiking" in polish)!

Sleeping at this altitude gave us a breath of sea breeze. And the motive of sunrise touched our three tough, male hearts:)

Kupari is a magical but also tragic place, a huge material testimony of the fratricidal war. Unfortunately, the next day we left it, but before we took advantage of sunlight and took more pictures.

What an amazing adventure. It tells us a few things, one, how thin the veil between have/have nots really is. It takes a few moments of shelling to bring down even the wealthiest of enclaves. Two, how destructive war is. Well done, nice post! @markrmorrisjr

Thank you, indeed abandoned places on magically way tell us something about the fragile nature of reality
