Travelling to Golden Temple and Jaliawalan Baag, Amritsar, India

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Hi,

It was very hot in bus while travelling to Amritsar, but once the evening arrived, a lovely climate was here. In evening, the place to visit is Wagah Border - the border between India and Pakistan. The friendahip parade was to start at 6:00 and I was well ahead of time. I reached Amritsar at around 3:30 pm, and took the bus to Wagah. They charged me about 35-40 rupees and within 1 hour I was at Wagah. One can walk the last one kilometer on feet or hire the tangahwala.

Wagah Border

One has to leave their bags at this place, only cameras, purse and phones are allowed as your luggage. The Indian crowd was huge and very much enthusiastic while the Pakistan side was empty. It was the main thing I observed there.

Soldiers of BSF of India performed the parade. The other side soldiers from Pakistan did the same. There was a handshake and both countries' flags were raised.

At 7:00 pm I came back to Amritsar. It is said that Golden temple looks more beautiful at night. So, after booking an ac room as cheap as 600 rupees near to the bus stand, I boarded onto a three wheeler, that charged me 10 rupees, and I reached the Golden temple at around 9:45 pm.

Golden Temple

There is security all around the place, and strict discipline is maintained. Take off your shoes outside the temple complex at the free shoes keeping service. Inside there is a big lake whose centre is adorned with the most beautiful pure Golden temple- Harminder Sahib.

Take a walk around the lake, it was very peaceful and meditative experience. Take photos, because you will miss the place otherwise.

There are fishes of different colors in the lake, don't try to touch them, it is prohibited.
There was a very long queue for the main temple aka Harminder Sahib, where one utters the prayers and take blessings of the Gurus. So I had to miss that one.

I visited the temple in very early morning at 5:00 am as well, but again there was a very long queue.

Jaliawalan Baag

This place is dedicated to the martyred Indian people who were brutally killed by the British general Dyre.

This well inside the big park is the place, where people jumped into, hoping to save their lifes from the incoming bullets. There are 36 bullet scars on the walls.

Just at the entrance of the gate is a big statue of Shaheed Udham Singh Ji Unam, the massacre survivor, who was serving water to people on that day. Later he would take the revenge by killing the Britisher responsible for the massacre at London. Please read the board in photo.

There are other famous places in Amritsar which I wouldn't visit this time. Most famous are the Harike Bird Sanctuary and museums of wars.

Thanks!
