Surfing at Pantai Pulau Merah in East Java, Indonesia
Indonesia has some of the best surfing spots in the world. Most people just go to Bali because it's easy and convenient, but there are so many different beautiful places in this country. This post is dedicated to a wonderful place called Pantai Pulau Merah (Red Island Beach).
Pantai Pulau Merah is on the Southern coast of East Java, about 2 hours by car from Banyuwangi, this is also where the ferry from Gilimanuk on Bali will arrive. There is not much public transportation this way and I suggest hiring a car and a driver to get you there.
Once you get to Pantai Pulau Merah, either stay in the expensive Surf Camp or in one of the cheap homestays along the main road (it's a short road and the homestays are all next to each other). You will find small places to eat (warungs) close to the parking lot at the beach.
There is no need to rent a scooter, everything is very close to each other and ou can easily walk everywhere. Once you get to the beach, the surf spot is on your left handside, facing Red Island. Be aware of the tides, you can only surf here during high tide.
If you want to explore the area, rent a bicycle and go West. The street will lead you to the next village and a beach called Pantai Mustika. It's a nice place to grab a coffee and chill for a while.
If you go to the end of the town you will find a river. Leave your bicycle with the local people and ask them to point you in the right direction for the trail that leads to a hidden beach called Pantai Wedi Ireng. You will have to cross the river and follow a muddy path through the jungle and over a hill to the other side. But it's totally worth it and you will have a white sandy beach and a beautiful bay all to yourself!
Once you are back in Pantai Pulau Merah, go to the beach to watch the sunset. The place is called Red Island for a reason. I was there during rainy season and unfortunately I didn't see the sky turning red. But I got this, and it was beautiful as well.
Pantai Pulau Merah is a popular tourist destination for local tourists from Java. There is not much English spoken in town and it can get very crowded on the weekends. Try to avoid pubilc holidays as well. Other than that, just go & enjoy it!
Wow, what a beautiful beach. :D
Lovely setting and well described
