Walk Around the Famous Chefchaouen, Morocco (The Blue City)

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

The past month I have had the pleasure of living in Chefchaouen, Morocco. Also known as the Blue City, essentially all of the houses and alleyways in the city are covered in blue paint making this is a unique city that is unlike any other in the world.

There are no cars or motored vehicles used in Chefchaouen as we can see above. People get around the city mostly by walking, unless they want to go out of the Blue City into the outer city with roads and all the normal items you would see in a typical modern city.

The picture above is one of the main squares in Chefchaouen and is where locals will often hang out during the evenings. During Ramadan, it wouldn't be uncommon to see a bunch of locals smoking hashish here after sunset as part of a celebration to break their fast. Or really any time of day outside of the Muslim holiday.

When you first arrive in Chefchaouen it can be hard to learn how to navigate around the city. As we can see here the alleyways are all blue, so they all look the same until you are familiar with the local shops and landmarks around the city.

There are well over 100 different hotels in Chefchaouen, even though the local population is only around 42,000 people. During the summertime, there are many tourists who come to visit Chefchaouen from Europe, Asia, Australia, or really anywhere in the world. The locals here say that this place is widely known as a city to relax in, which is what causes many people to come here for a vacation.

In most hotels, you will be able to go up to a terrace where you can view the rest of the city, and the mountains in the background. The view from that we see above was taken at Hotel Andaluz in Chefchaouen, which is one of the most affordable hotels in the city.

Here is another view of the mountains from the terrace at Hotel Ibn Batouta, which offers perhaps the best price for a hotel in Chefchaouen without having to go to a cheap hostel.

There are only two ways to get around by walking in Chefchaouen, walking up or walking down. Since the city is right next to a mountain, there are stairs, steep inclines, and constant ups and downs as you walk around the city.

Whether you want to visit the Blue City for fun, relaxation, hiking, food, to learn about the culture, or perhaps even the hashish, you will not regret your decision. Chefchaouen is one of the most tranquil cities in Morocco and is located very close to the Sahara Desert for further adventures.
