Eating Out - Opium Restaurant & Bar - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

It’s 8pm on Thursday night and Opium, a stylish Chinese bar and restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, is full to capacity.

Red lanterns sit atop wooden posts, surrounding the venue’s outdoor deck, and hint as to what lies within the tastefully decorated restaurant. The dining rooms, adorned with age-old Chinese artefacts, give the Opium a distinct 1930’s vibe and elicit visions of a long forgotten period of history.

It's a popular restaurant with locals and tourists alike, and it has taken me almost a week to get a dinner booking here.

Somewhat unusually for KL, where food venues are as famous for their no-frills service as they are for flavour packed meals, Opium is big on both style and service. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and the menu too is a treat, with an eclectic blend of Chinese and traditional Malaysian dishes that are a delight to the taste buds and to the eye.

Served with steamed lotus leaf buns and poppy seed rice we had the Angus Beef Rendang and the Braised 5 Spice Duck and I highly recommend both. As for drinks, the choice is almost endless and Opium’s drink menu is extensive. It was the cocktail list, however, that caught my eye, and I recommend trying their signature Black Dragon cocktail; made with vodka, crème de cassis, lemon juice and blackberries, you won’t want to stop at just one.

Dining out at Opium wasn't the cheapest meal I had in Kuala Lumpur, but it didn't break the bank either. Rated within the top twenty restaurants in KL by Trip Adviser, Opium is well worth a visit, and is without a doubt, one of my favourite restaurants in KL if not the whole of Malaysia.
