What to do in and around Middelburg?

Hey Steemit and dear followers. Thanks for tuning in. In this episode about my hometown, I would like to show you the various activities that you can do when visiting.

But first, you need a place to stay!

Obviously, you need a place to spend the night when visiting. There are multiple options for accomodation. First, there are many hotels in the city center, but I don't recommend staying in a hotel because of the relatively high prices. What I recommend is that you look for a B&B or a camping ground near the city. This is cheaper, but beware that those can get full very fast in the summer. There are a lot of German tourists that come to visit the region. If you don't like camping, try going for a B&B or take a look at a service like airbnb for cheap rooms.

Now that you have a place to sleep, let's see what to do!

Sightseeing

The obvious thing to do when you're in Middelburg is to see the city itself. As you may have already seen in the previous episode, Middelburg is a city with a lot of history, which you can see in the architecture and the many monuments that are scattered around the city center.

You can explore the city on your own, which is doable given the size of it. Just go to the nearest tourist information office and ask about the various routes you can take. Another option is to do a guided tour through the city. This gives you the opportunity to look around more, while the guide tells all the nice stories about the city.

Bars and Restaurants

Middelburg offers a good amount of possibilities for people that want to go out and have a drink. Especially in the summer, you can find many terraces where you can have a drink and a bite to eat. There are many restaurants too, which serve good quality food, and many of them are pretty cheap as well. You don't really have to plan out where you're going to go. Just walk around and look for a nice place to sit down. This is not a big city like Barcelona where they try and get as much money from you as possible.

As for the nightlife in the city, there are plenty of bars to go and have a drink. Here in the South of the country, you'll get served a nice, Belgian beer or something else that you'd like. If you want to go dancing, there are only a couple of clubs, but in general they are enjoyable.

¡Vamos a la playa!

Zeeland is a coastal province, and so there are many beaches not too far away from Middelburg. The province has the most amount of beaches in the country and some of them have won prizes for the best beach and the cleanest beach of the country. You can easily go to the beach by bicycle, bus or car. Another option is to get a room or rent a house in one of the towns near the beaches. Going to the beach is an excellent activity if you want a day to relax outside Middelburg.

Sights outside the city

There is also a lot to see and do outside the city. Around Middelburg you can find various small towns which are fun to visit. My personal favorite is the town of Veere, which also has a long history and beautiful architecture. Another cool sight is the old Napoleonic fort just outside Middelburg. All towns, beaches and sights are easily accessible by car, but also by bicycle, which I recommend doing as it's part of Dutch culture! You can also choose to just take the bike and explore in any direction if you want, which is also a fun activity.
