What to do in Vienna

I cannot not do a post about what to do in Vienna, after having been so many times. Maybe each of those that have been there have different versions of what must be done. Vienna is an amazing city and there’s really, plenty of things to do and see. What I will try now is to compile the things I believe are the most important. I have not included any museums or palaces here, which are plenty and all are worth visiting. My point was to pick things that individually do not take a long time (we know that museums take a few hours each on average if we really want to get into it…)

  1. Eat Sachertorte and drink some Wiener Melange. Sachertorte is a traditional Austrian dessert, extremely sweet. I have eaten at Aida Konditorei and also at the Kunst-Café (next to Hundertwasserhaus). Both times served with Wiener melange and could barely finish the slice. Both times in heaven.

  2. Stroll & shop on Mariahilferstrasse. The thing with this super long shopping street is that it offers you affordable shopping options (Forever 21, Bershka, H&M etc) and from time to time, little corners of heaven, be it a noodle place, a pizza place or a Starbucks to refuel.

  3. Visit the Stephansplatz, and take some photos of Stephansdom (inside and outside, it’s majestic). Do stroll on the streets that stem from the place – there is a wonderful mix of luxury and high end shops, antique stores and book shops.

  4. Go to Prater amusement park. You don’t have to pay a ticket to get into the parc, so you can still stroll around and have a look at the attractions and all kinds of foods and drinks you could have. I suggest you have some cotton candy and hop on Wiener Riesenrad – giant Viennese ferris wheel – and you can admire from up there the beauty of the Austrian capital.

  5. See the Hundertwasserhaus. It’s an apartment building conceptualised by artist Friedrich Hundertwasser . You cannot go inside and visit, as actual people live there, but you can go inside the Hundertwasser Gallery right next to it, and the Kunst-Café – there you can enjoy some Sachertorte with coffee while watching a video on the artist and the building.

Have you been to Vienna? What are your suggestions?
