The coldest village on Earth, Temperature can hit -71.2C

in #travel7 years ago

If you think you have some cool temperatures where you live , get ready for an insight into the world's coldest small town. You will feel terrible !!

Nestled in northeastern Russia is the village of Oymyakon, which is known to have an average temperature of -58 degrees Fahrenheit in January.

The village's coldest temperature ever recorded, in 1924, hit -160.16 degrees Fahrenheit—talk about chilly! With these way-below-freezing temperatures, Oymyakon hold the title of the world's coldest inhabited settlement. Its residents have to do some pretty outrageous things—like live only on a diet of only reindeer meat and horse meat—just to survive on a day-to-day basis.

The town, also known as the "Pole of the Cold," is home to 500 people and was originally settled as a pit stop for reindeer herders to give water to their animals from the town's thermal spring, which is actually why the village is called Oymyakon—it's a word that means "non-freezing water." And if you thought your children's school was stingy on snow days, Oymyakon's one school will close only if temperatures reach -61.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

But what is even crazier about this small, bitterly cold town is that even though pen ink freezes, glasses freeze to people's faces, and mobile phone service is non-existent, tourists are still willing to visit the village to sample what life is like.

The village, which is home to around 500 people, was, in the 1920s and 1930s, a stopover for reindeer herders who would water their flocks from the thermal spring.

But the Soviet government, in its efforts to settle nomadic populations, believing them to be difficult to control and technologically and culturally backward, made the site a permanent settlement.Ironically, Oymyakon actually means 'non-freezing water' due to a nearby hot spring.

Most homes in Oymyakon still burn coal and wood for heat and enjoy few modern conveniences.
Nothing grows there so people eat reindeer meat and horse meat. A single shop provides the town's bare necessities and the locals work as reindeer-breeders, hunters and ice-fisherman.
Doctors say the reason the locals don't suffer from malnutrition is that their animals' milk contains a lot of micronutrients.Unsurprisingly, locals are hardened to the weather and unlike in other countries - where a flurry of snow brings things grinding to a halt, Oymakon's solitary school only shuts if temperatures fall below -52C.

The village is located around 750 metres above sea level and the length of a day varies from 3 hours in December to 21 hours in the summer.
And despite its terrible winters, in June, July and August temperatures over 30c are not uncommon.
There are few modern conveniences in the village - with many buildings still having outdoor toilets - and most people still burn coal and wood for heat. When coal deliveries are irregular the power station starts burning wood. If the power ceases, the town shuts down in about five hours, and the pipes freeze and crack.

I'd love to live there.

That was a very interesting post but the cheetah bot upvoted you and find content that was similar. I clicked on the link and I saw that you posted a lot of the content word for word. Although you did mention your source, the steemit community wont reward a post like that. Then also they hate "follow for follow' That is in your blog and and beneath your post. Rather post someting like: If you liked my content please upvote and follow me for similar or something else. It is tough you must look for original content you can post or when you do an article you have to at least put it over in your own words and then still quote your reference.
