Travel Gem #13: Don't Miss these Ancient Frescos in Santorini 不要錯過這些古老的壁畫

While you are in Santorini, walk along the winding streets and visit the many art shops.  Spend some time looking at the beautiful artwork of this island, particularly drawings of ancient frescoes. They are amazing and tell you stories of early settlement on this island.

You will find this kind of beautiful artwork placed outside of many shops.  We asked the shopkeepers for permission to take pictures and they allowed us to take pictures with them.

The frescoes bring you back to the Bronze age from Akrontiri showing you what the ancient Greek world was like between 1650 - 1660 BCE.  

Looking at these frescoes, we get an idea that Santorinians loved the ocean and fish.  

Here is a classic fisherman fresco that you see in almost every shop.  

It is a drawing of a male figure holding a bunch of fish in each hand tied together with yellow string. 

Santorni suffered a devastating earthquake followed by a volcanic eruption, so the early settlement of Akrotiri had layers of pumice and volcanic ash.  When archaeologists did their expeditions in 1967, they uncovered a lot of vibrant freacoes of beautiful fresco walls of the buildings in town.  

These are beautifully preserved, aren't they?

Take your time like I do when you walk through these art shops.

We found these boxers frescoes:

Look at the what the two boys are wearing.  Notice that  the boys wear only a belt and loincloth with one boxing glove on the right hand.  The boy on the left wears lots of jewellery which is unexpected.  He has a necklace on with earings, bracelets and even anklets.  

Travel Gem Hint:  Take your time at night strolling these winding streets.  Enjoy the artwork that gives you a glimpse of ancient life in Santorini.
