Travel Gem #12 - Breathtaking Caldera to Mud Bath in Santoroni 令人驚嘆的火山口的泥浴

I am going to take you to the mud path that is little known in Santorini.  It is a must go destination if you ever come to Santorini.

Why is there mud bath in Santorini?  

You need to be aware that Santorini is actually a volcanic island.  Many people do not know that. They only know they need to see the beautiful sunset.  

First, look at this panoramic photo.  Look at how beautiful Santorini is situated on the circular Caldera.  

Here is an aerial view of the island of Santorini so that you can see that the beautiful island with beautiful caldera and volcanic craters from above.

Santorini is actually a large caldera submerged in the Aegean Sea.  The main island is called Therasia and Aspronisi at the periphery with Kameni islands in the center.  

In the center are 2 small volcanic islands called New Kameni and Old Kameni.

Santorini used to be a single island on its own but after a few enormous volcanic eruptions, it destroyed the earliest settlements creating the geological caldera that you see today.  The giant central lagoon measures about 12 by 7 km and surrounded by very high and steep cliffs.  Thira is the capital city and from there you can look down on the lagoon.

Travel Gem Tip:   Must get close to see ACTIVE craters!

This kind of experience is very rare so on this day, we took a day off to visit the ACTIVE craters on this volcano land.

We went to the old port of Fira to take the ferry to Nea Kameni.  

It is only a 10 minute ride, one that will take your mind off from the busyness of the world and you can quickly quiet down to embrace nature - enjoy the breeze and the blue sky and water taking you onto an inner journey of life.

When we travel, we are attracted by what we see on the outside.  There is also an inner journey.  Listen to what your heart is saying to you in your travels.

Travel Gem Tip:  Don't forget the inner journey of life within you.

And this is what I do every time when I travel.  I also go on an inner journey of my life to enjoy these quiet moments so that I am all ears to hear what God has to say to me.

There is a path that reaches to the top where you can see smoking craters. 

Here I am with one of them and you can smell that strong sulfur.

Take a day off to venture this part of the island.

Tour groups come and go and it is quite exciting watching their expressions of awe.

So funny!  

My hubby had become their tour guide to show them the active craters!

From here, you can make your way to the  famous mud baths that were formed as result of volcanic eruptions.   The water temperature is about 35 degrees Celsius.  It would have been hotter but because of the sea currents, the water drops.

Enjoy the beautiful mud healthy bath!

After a day of fun, we take the ferry back to the old port of Thira.
