The Plaza Bolívar de Maracay was inaugurated on December 19th, 1930 on the occasion of the centenary of the death of the Father of the Nation Simón Bolívar. It is 320 meters long and 106 meters wide, and has a replica of the equestrian statue of Simón Bolívar. It was declared a National Historic Monument in 1994.

In its natural spaces, the square has a varied flora, peculiar iguanas and birds. Likewise, it has roundabouts, benches, lanterns and beautiful illuminated fountains that give the place a very dynamic touch.

Families visit it especially on weekends in order to enjoy an unparalleled atmosphere, which increases in December, when the square is decorated with Christmas motifs that make it more attractive especially for children.

In front of the square you can see the old Jardín Hotel, built by architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva with neoclassical and Renaissance influence. It houses the largest photographic mural in Latin America. While providing hotel service, he received very important guests such as singer-songwriter Carlos Gardel and US President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. For long years it served as the seat of the state Government Palace.

Crosswise, there is the emblematic Opera Theater, renowned concert and performance hall, declared a National Historic Monument. The colossal work, where sober horizontal lines predominate, was developed by architects Luis Malaussena and Carlos Raúl Villanueva.
