THE VATICAN CITY
The Vatican City is a sovereign State located within the city of Rome, which has an area of 44 hectares and a population of about 800 inhabitants.
The Saint Peter’s Basilica, located in the square of the same name, is considered one of the most sacred temples of Catholicism, and it is said to be located on the tomb of the apostle Saint Peter. Renowned architects of the stature of Michelangelo, Bernini and Bramante worked in its building.
Among the places I could visit in the basilica there is its dome, 45 meters high, from where I had an unparalleled panoramic view of Rome. In the same way, I was able to take a tour of the papal tombs, where I noticed that the most visited was the tomb of Pope St. John Paul II.
Another site worth knowing is the compound of the Vatican Museums, where I had the pleasure of visiting various exhibition halls that show important works of religious art. There is also the famous Sistine Chapel, which houses beautiful Renaissance frescoes, where the Last Judgment stands out, on the north wall and the Creation of Adam on the roof, both works by Michelangelo.
During the visit I was curious to see the characteristic extravagant uniforms worn by the agents responsible for the protection of the pope known as the Swiss Guard.
