Yashas Travelogue #11 : 6 things to remember about Singapore MRT(Metro) usage as a visitorsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #travel7 years ago

Singapore is a city of varied colors. One of the most evolved and expensive cities in the world does find a way to offer cheap transport to all the commuters. Singapore to me has the best in class Metro Rail transport system. Efficient use of SMRT is one way you can cut down on your expenses while you travel in Singapore.

6 things to remember while using Singapore Metro as a tourist

- Use EZLink card to travel cashless and save time with hassle free travel

A widely connected network and well maintained metro cabins serves to every class of commuter in Singapore. It is also the fastest way to go across the city. Your journey in Singapore should start with the very useful EZ Link card. This card can be brought at any of the EZ Link transit stations. Various plans can be availed depending on your stay at Singapore.

EZLink card with the plans can be chosen from their official website, the one that I had was SGD 12, with SGD 7 as credit balance and SGD 5 as the refundable deposit. It is an easy access card which enables you to travel around cashless and hassle free. Singapore metro also charge you a very minimal cost for your commute.

For people planning on extended stay at Singapore I would recommend you to go through the benefits of EZ Link card which can be extended to grocery shopping and other payments as well. Upon your exit from Singapore the refundable deposit will be given back to you.

-Get your free SMRT route map at any metro station as a guide

SMRT route map is readily available at all metro stations for tourists and free of cost, do request for one as soon as you reach Singapore. This will save you time and effort. This will give you a clear cut information on the exchange lines and stations which fits your destination

-Cleanliness is a highlight of Singapore Metro, make sure you maintain it

Singapore as we all know is known to be a very clean city. Metro transport system stands as a testimony to it. The metro stations are well maintained with guide boards everywhere. One does not find a reason to complain. It is also an integrated transport system where commuter finds it very simple to switch between metro lines. This is one nice feature which makes Singapore transport system stand out of transport systems of other nations.

- Do not eat inside the metro, unless paying fine is your passion

SMRT has strict rules when it comes to cleanliness inside the cabins. You are not allowed to take edible items inside the cabin. Fine upto SGD 500 may be imposed on offenders. This is not a small money. So, unless you love paying fines do not try anything with the food inside metro while you are traveling.

- Making way to your fellow commuters is always a nice gesture to follow

The way Singaporeans conduct themselves is another factor worth mentioning. The system followed to board the train and to get down the train is a disciplined approach to create a successful system. People here stay organized even on escalators. One side of escalator is dedicated to still commuters and the other side is for people who would want to have a brisk movement.

You can board the train in any particular station only after everyone who are supposed to get down in that station have come out of the metro cabins. Rushing your self and creating an issue for other commuters is not an option.

- Singapore MRT usage – Always use SMRT for airport transfers

Singapore metro starts from Changi International Airport, it is always the best option to use metro for your airport transfers. One of the cheapest and fastest way to Singapore Airport.

It is indeed... A small country with high impact value... I loved my experience there

Yeah. I envy that country as a neighbor because my country a way behind them.

Well, of course, I have to upvote this one when it's about the metro system of my homeland :))

You're right that taking the MRT is one of the cheapest and most reliable ways to get to the airport..

As a stewardess, I took the train regularly to the airport to report for flights. A little over an hour from Marsiling MRT station (red line) to Changi Airport MRT station (green line) each time. :)

Isn't it?? It is definitely thebest way as well, considering the traffic on roads.... I am sure this was a lifeline to u in many ways :)

Yeah also much easier to tow a luggage back onto a train than up onto a public bus :)

haha i know..... Its a blessing in disguise
