Great rival of ancient Athens, Thebes dominated the Boeotian confederation and even lent assistance to Xerxes during the Persian invasion of -480. Archaeological excavations have revealed Mycenaean installations dating back even further. Today, Thebes is nothing more than a simple town, a small commercial town.
