Visit to Papa, HungarysteemCreated with Sketch.

in #travel7 years ago

Leaving Budapest today, I hopped on the M1 highway and headed towards Vienna. After about an hour, I exited towards the county of Veszprem and continued on towards the small Hungarian city of Papa, located in the northern part of the Bakony Hills, in Western Hungary.

Papa is a small city of population estimated 30,000 and like most small Hungarian cities, there is a old, inner, historical city center and an newer, outer city area which is more residential in nature. The city center has many heritage buildings, a couple of walking streets where you'll find many small shops and a few cafes and restaurants. Although not a city full of tourists, Papa is a place where you can sense part of Hungary's more glorious past and it's magnificent baroque architecture. The city still needs a bit renovation, but, for some, the lack of any significant tourism may be the lure of attraction to the city. Papa is not the place you'll sit into a cafe and order an 'Americano' coffee. You have to go with the more traditional espresso. Also, bring along a tour guide in your native language as you may not find many people speaking anything other than Hungarian here.

In any case, for the 'braver at heart', it's well worth a day's excursion. Amongst the main attractions are the center square baroque-style Roman Catholic Church and the renovated Eszterhazy Mansion.

Today, I've taken several pictures to give a small idea of it's essence.

If you have a little Hungarian language training, you'll be able to pick up on the specific accent or dialect in this part of the country. The 'A,a' vowels are pronounced differently giving kind of a 'southern drawl' sound, at least from my 'American ear's' point of view.

I hope you all enjoy it and one day get the chance to come out and visit this city.
