„What could be better for recharging our batteries than a charming little cottage out in the quiet and beautiful nature of Scandinavia“ - That’s what we thought when we were browsing AirBnB for a place to spend our Easter vacation. We wanted to go on a retreat in a self-contained place far outside the business of the vibrant city of Copenhagen, with stunning nature surroundings (which isn’t hard to find in this corner of the globe), and - most importantly - a fireplace and for a chimney fire. With those requirements thrown into the AirBnB filter, we browsed around in places that were close enough to reach by the excellent train system yet still far enough to be actually able to switch off.

Living near the Beach in a Swedish Cottage

We discovered this cozy self-contained cottage in the small town of Åhus, a picturesque gem on the south east coast of the southern Swedish region of Skåne. In a quiet residential area only a 5 minute walk away from the beach, the house felt like a home immediately. It was perfect for our little retreat: a self-contained kitchen, a cozy living room with a hammock, and even a small fireplace. The owner, Gunilla, was super nice and friendly. She greeted us with a warm welcome on the first day, showed us how everything works, gave us good recommendations for local restaurants, and was very helpful in answering all our questions. At the same time, she made sure not to disturb us if we wanted to rest. That way, we could totally relax and feel at home, and after a short while we felt full of energy and ideas. There were even some local specialties for breakfast in the fridge and enough wood to keep the fireplace going all weekend. In all, the house was lovely and we will definitely come back one day!

Åhus - Birds, Beaches, Architecture, and Absolut Vodka

Åhus itself is mostly known for its bird-watching opportunities, charming houses, beautiful beach front, and last but not least the world-famous Absolut Vodka which has its origins here.

Goodbye Åhus! It was certainly not the last time we met. Maybe next time in the summer? Or when you wear the beautiful colors of autumn?
