A Tour through Matka Canyon, where the Water is Green and the Caves are Pretty (Macedonia)

today I would like to take you down to Matka Canyon, or the paradise city where the water is green and the caves are pretty ;-) Situated about an hour’s drive of the Macedonian Capital Skopje, Matka Canyon is a true nature wonder of the Balkans in Europe.
It's a short and beautiful hike alongside the shiny green water until you reach the place where you can only continue by boat.
We were especially lucky to have sunshine weather on the day we hiked to the Matka Canyon. That brought out the green of the water especially well.
Covering over 5000 hectar area, the Matka Canyon is one of the most popular outdoors activities in Macedonia. It is also the oldest artificial lake of the country.
Once you get on the boat, it's a beautiful ride until you reach the next stop: Vrelo Cave
Vrelo Cave, located on the right bank of the Canyon, is frequently listed as one of the top 100 natural sites in the world. It has many stalactites including a large one in the middle of the cave known as the "Pine Cone".
There are two lakes at the end of the cave. Although the exact depth of Vrelo Cave is unknown, some speculations say that it could be one of the deepest underwater caves in the world.

Honestly, looking at this photos made me think this is Thailand or Philippines! :) Nature is so lush and green! I did hear about this canyon before, but your post made me want to visit it even more! How much time do people usually spend there? Is one day enough to see everything?

There are not too many resources about Macedonia in Romania, very few visitors from our country to this wonderful, as is shown from your pictures. While I read the article I've been looking for airline tickets to Macedonia and they seem quite expensive for our budget, currently, may in the future there will be less expensive. What powerful medieval air.
