On the coast of Raouché area in Beirut-Lebanon, you will find a natural landmark known as “the rock of Raouché”, consists of two huge rocks standing like giant guards protecting the shores of Beirut and they are a popular touristic place for the Lebanese and foreigners.

The place of Raouché is introduced as the area’s oldest evidence of human existence, according to some instruments found in the area which are displayed in the AUB archaeological Museum, for example: (flints and basic stone tools).

Geologists assume that the Raouché rock is a result of several strong earthquakes that hit Beirut in the 13th century. These earthquakes destroyed many of the inhabited islands at the time, resulting the Raouché rock.

Raouché rock consists of two enormous rocks (one is larger than the other) and the bigger one has a hollow in it, and its height is about 70 meters, while the second rock was affected by factors of erosion, which led to make it in a pointed shape.

Some historians believe that the word “Raouché” derives from the Aramic word “roshor” (which means head), other historians argue that it is from the French word roche (rocher) (that means rock), also it’s known as the “(Pigeon Rock).

The rock is also known as the rock of love and also called the rock of suicide since many suicides are committed there.

بالقرب من شاطئ منطقة الروشة في بيروت-لبنان, ستجد معلماً طبيعياً معروفا باسم "صخرة الروشة", و هو يتألف من صخرتين ضخمتين تشبهان حارسين عملاقين يحميان شوطئ بيروت, و هما من أبرز الأماكن السياحية للبنانين والأجانب.

تعتبر منطقة الروشة أقدم دليل على وجود الإنسان, طبقاً لبعض الأدوات الموجودة في المنطقة و التي يتم عرضها في المتحف الأثري في
الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت, منها على سبيل المثال: الصوان و الأدوات الأساسية الحجرية.

يعتقد الجيولوجيون أن صخرة الروشة هي نتيجة زلازل قوية ضربت بيروت في القرن الثالث عشر, حيث دمرت هذه الزلازل العديد من الجزر المأهولة في ذلك الوقت, مما أنتج صخرة الروشة.

تتكون صخرة الروشة من صخرتين ضخمتين (إحداهما أكبر من ألأخرى) و الأكبر يوجد فيها تجويف, و يبلغ ارتفاعها 70 متراً, في حين تأثرت الصخرة الثانية بعوامل التأكل, مما أدى إلى جعل شكلها مدبب.

كما يقول بعض المؤرخين أن كلمة "روشة" مشتقة من الكلمة الأرآمية "روشر" (التي تعني الرأس), و يقول مؤرخون آخرون بأنها من الكلمة الفرنسية روش (روشير) التي تعني الصخرة, و من أسمائها أيضاً (صخرة الحمام).
تُعرف الصخرة أيضاً بإسم "صخرة الحب", كما و تسمّى صخرة الإنتحار نظراً لارتكاب العديد من حالات الإنتحار هناك.
