Next to tripoli harbor in the north of Lebanon you will find a tower which is considered as one of the most exceptional examples of military Mameluke architecture, a small fortress named the Lion tower.

The tower construction is back dated to the end of the fifteenth century, during the rule of the Mameluke Sultan Qaitbay.

Who is Qaitbay?
El-Sultan Sayf El-Dine El-Ashraf Qaitbay was born in the 1418 in Great Circassia, he was skilled in archery and horsemanship, that was the reason wich encouraged the Sultan Barsbay to assign him as a member of the palace guard, until the rule of Sayf El-Dine Inal, Qaitbay was promoted through the Mamluk military hierarchy to become a commander of a thousand Mamluks, to finally get appointed as a field marshal of the entire Mamluk army under the rule of the Sultan Timurbugha.

After a revolution inside the castle in 1468, Qaitbay was proposed as a compromise candidate acceptable from the different factions to become the Sultan.

In the 1477 he constructed a citadel located in Alexandria-Egypt the place where he ruled his sultanate for almost 28 years, where this citadel is considered one of the most important defensive strongholds in the mediterranean sea coast (The Citadel of Qaitbay).

The name “Lion tower” was derived from the lion decorations that were engraved on the frontispiece of the tower.

Its porch were trimmed with black and white stripes from ashlar stones, in addition to the ancient Roman columns that were used in reinforcing the tower’s wall and the ground floor which is about a large room decorated with armorial carvings and paintings, part of them still visible until these days.

بالقرب من مرفأ طرابلس في شمال لبنان يمكنك ان تجد احد ابرز الابراج التي تمثل الهندسة المعمارية العسكرية المملوكية، و هي قلعة صغيرة تدعى برج السباع.

يعود تاريخ بناء هذا البرج الى نهاية القرن الخامس عشر خلال حكم السلطان المملوكي قيتباي.

من هو قيتباي؟
هو السلطان سيف الدين الأشرف قيتباي، ولدفي عام 1418 في شركاسيا العظمى، و لقد كان ماهراً في الرماية و الفروسية و هذا هو السبب الذي جعل السلطان بارسباي القيام بتعيينه عضواً في حرس القصر، حتى استلم سيف الدين انال الحكم فتمت ترقية قيتباي من خلال التسلسل الهرمي العسكري المملوكي ليصبح قائد ألف عسكري مملوكي، ليتم لاحقاً تعيينه مدير ميداني لجيش المماليك بأكمله تحت حكم السلطان تيموربوغا.

بعد حصول ثورة داخل القلعة في عام 1468، اتُفِق على تسمية قيتباي كمرشح توافقي بين مختلف الفصائل ليصبح عندها هو السلطان.

في عام 1477, قام ببناء قلعة في الاسكندرية-مصر وهو المكان الذي حكم منه السلطنة مدة ما يقارب 28 عام وتعتبر هذه القلعة من أهم المعاقل الدفاعية في ساحل البحر الابيض المتوسط (قلعة قيتباي).

أما بالنسبة لتسميته "برج السباع" فلقد اشتق الاسم من الزخارف المحفورة اعلى واجهته.

تم تزيين مدخل البرج بأحجار الياقوت المخطّطة باللونين الاسود والابيض، بالاضافة الى الاعمدة الرومانية القديمة التي استخدمت في تقوية جدار البرج امّا الطابق الأرضي الذي هو عبارة عن غرفة كبيرة مزينة بالمنحوتات و اللوحات، والتي لا زلنا نستطيع ان نشاهد جزء منها حتى يومنا هذا.
