Why Caye Caulker, Belize was the most laid back and relaxed place we've ever vacationed.

Go Slow is the saying here. If you seem to be walking with a purpose you'll hear it from a local. "Go Slow" they say in a smooth relaxing voice. You'll see it written on walls in restaurants, bars and on T-shirts in the touristy booths.

If you saw my first post on Belize, the Insane Moho River Rafting experience then you know we loved Belize, but Caye Caulker is an entirely different feel. We purposefully made it our last stop on this trip so we could take a week to just unwind and relax before returning to work. After the adventures we'd had in Belize, it was well deserved.

You can almost see the entire island from here

First off Caye Caulker is a tiny island with no vehicles other than old golf carts. It's only 2 miles long and half a mile wide and nearly everyone walks everywhere. There are several restaurants and bars and expeditions that leave the island, but for the most part we enjoyed just taking in the sun and beauty. That's rare for us as our vacations in the past usually consist of us trying to pack the very most into every stop and location. But in Caye Caulker, that means packing the most relaxation in.

Start by buying a container of fresh squeezed mixed juices from the street vendor. A couple of bucks will get you a liter of orange, pineapple, mango. Now grab some rum from the small grocery store on the island which is also just a couple of bucks. You are good for for the day of "go slow" now.

Next visit the fishing docks on the back side of the island and you'll find some fisherman returning with their catch. We picked up two lobsters and a red snapper, again for just a few dollars. Back to the store for butter and lemon and a few charcoal pieces.
There are grills setup at a few spots at the beach. Now you really have something when you are on this beautiful island beach, grilling fresh caught wild lobster and red snapper while sucking down a liter of juice and rum as the sun sets and Caribbean music plays in the background. Rinse and repeat until your sanity returns and you can face the world again.

Visit the docks to buy fresh seafood from the fishermen who will also clean it for you and have it ready to cook

There was one of those party boats that takes folks out each night for drinks and sunset cruise, but we had done that before in a few places and wanted something more laid back. So, we hit the docks and found a very friendly fisherman with a very small boat and asked if we could hire him to take us for a short sunset ride. He was more than excited. In fact, he ran home and grabbed a radio so we could listen to music while cruising. He also grabbed a buddy to help guide and steer the boat. This turned out to be an incredible experience. We cruised around the island until the sunset and hand fished and caught many fish. Then when it was pitch black, we pointed the boat toward the lights from the island and headed in. It's hard to put a price on something like that, it's just a great experience to get to know some locals and find a way to give back to them for their hospitality. We enjoyed it so much, we did it again the next evening.

There is a cave under this island that I want to write about in another post it's so incredible. We visited what looked to be a tiny pond on the island to witness these huge fish that come up out of the cave to look for food. A local there was selling some bait fish so you could feed them. Man, they would nearly take your hand off to get that food. This spot isn't known much to tourists so ask around and a local will take you or show you the way.

Our favorite "restaurant". It's just a grill on the beach for a couple dollars they'll grill you up the special of the day why you enjoy the beach. Or, bring them your fresh catch and they'll grill it for next to nothing

If you're in the mood for company, this is the "split", which is where a lot of people like to hang out, listen to music and have drinks

You know it's a small airport when you arrive and they say "Just go ahead and toss your luggage in the plane"

Yes, I'm trying Dtube again! If you know of a way to embed a Dtube video into a post please let me know. that drives me crazy. I see where I could create the entire post on Dtube but I didn't like how that turned out exactly. Pointers are appreciated.

I love the views = ) Belize is definitely one of the most beautiful locations that I have read about on Steemit. It sure looks like a place where you could go and just forget about everything else and enjoy the beautiful weather, friendly people, healthy delicious food made/caught by the locals. So many activities to do there depending the place where you are staying. Did you folks stay in a hotel or ? I'm sure some good hotels offer many activities ^^

Thank you for contributing to the Steemit Community.Keep up the great work and I'm looking forward to your next posts.

Thank you. It is definitely all of those things. We found a rental there that was sort of like an apartment. There isn't anything really fancy on the island but it was a great place.

Those are some truly beautiful pictures. What type of camera do yall use?

My coworker just came back from vacation from there. Seems to be a popular country to visit. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you. These were from an older Sony aloha nex5. Mirrorless DSLR.

Beautiful images and from your description sounds like a fantastic spot to relax and unwind
I want to be there now 😂

Thanks, we pretty much never visit the same place twice, but I'd really love to return for more rest and relaxation. It's the perfect mix of nothing to do but with a few restaurants and places to get good drinks. We also stayed on a little uninhabited island, but I needed somewhere to get some food and drink!

Getting on in years I love the idea 💡 of Rest and relaxing

My husband's dream is to go to Belize for deepsea fishing. He is an avid fisherman, builds his own custom rods (http://www.turnerscustomrods.com/) and has said over and over, how he'd love to go.

Wow, he makes some really beautiful rods. I have no idea how you could get them so intricate. I've never even heard of anyone that made custom fishing rods! When I was little we would buy bamboo poles and make them into bargain basement fishing rods with just some fishing line tied to the end :)
You both would love Belize. You should just do it! It's incredible and people are very friendly.

He's been doing it for nearly 30 years. He's teaching himself some of the very intricate thread work now. He does a lot of restoration work too, on very old rods from as far back as the 1930's.

I'm afraid trips anywhere won't ever be in the cards unless my sister hits the lottery....

I understand that. Our travel is definitely taking a major hit now that we are retired farmers! Don't rule it out though, Belize is very easy to do cheaply. The plane ticket would be the most expensive, everything else is a fraction of the cost of here in the U.S. Food is so cheap it's basically free, and people will take you out fishing for a few dollars. Very nice rooms can be had for 10 - 15 dollars per night. Travel is important to us so we make it a priority, but that's getting harder to do now for sure.
