How I Almost Fell Off a Cliff in Banos, Ecuador
As a kid, I used to love playing on the swings at my school playground and I still occasionally go for a quick swing every now and then with my dog.
A couple of summers ago, I participated on an international volunteer trip to Ecuador with Help, Learn and Discover (HLD) and finally met a worth adversary in Banos, known as the “Swing at the End of the World” at La Casa del Arbol (The Tree house).
To get to La Casa del Arbol, you will need to get your ass kicked by the grueling uphill hike for approximately 3 hours, if you are in good shape. Adventurers can also choose to travel by bus or taxi, but they won’t get rewarded by the stunning view along the way.
Once you reach the tree house site, there is a small admission fee to be paid before you are sent flying off the cliff. The setup essentially consist of a old, frayed rope attached to a thin branch of the tree house.
As you sit on the swing, the gentleman at the end will strap you in loosely with a rubber belt and send you off to the after life. I still remember flying at 2,600 meters above sea level and being mesmerized by the exhilarating view of the Tungurahua Volcano while engulfed by the morning sun.
To be honest, this experience is not for everyone as I felt slightly queasy after my turn, but it is definitely worthy as a buck-list item.
What do you think of this bucket-list item?
