Playa Izquierda: Down the Rabbit Hole to Costa Rica's Faery Dream World

Fresh home from a 2 week trip to Costa Rica, I am still processing & integrating all of the amazing magick that took place.

My partner Levi, @crystalgeometry & I did little to no planning before leaving the country. My managers had mentioned to me that I would love Playa Samara. That was enough for me to go on. We followed the intuitive guidance, & after arriving in San Jose, Levi & I found a bus the next morning to Playa Samara. Upon arrival we were so pleased to find a quaint, hippy beach town with plenty of organic & vegetarian food options, as well as like-minded people & an incredibly easy-going vibe.

Down the Rabbit Hole

One of the most sacred, secluded, & magickal places we visited in Samara was without a doubt, Playa Izquierda. This is a local spot off of the beaten path that requires you do some research in order to even find it. They say that someone with a lot of money bought the bluffs overlooking Samara years ago. They started putting in infrastructure like dirt roads & drainage to begin developing the land. By a twist of fate, the permits for said development were denied & now the bluffs are covered with a series of trails, vista points, & hidden beaches... like La Playa Izquierda.

I have to admit that finding Playa Izquirda was a bit of a wild goose chase. Levi & I set off into the jungle with limited directions & figured our intuition would lead us in the right direction. After a short hike we were lead to the incredible overlook shown below. At this point, we figured that we had to be close to the elusive beach.

We were not even CLOSE to finding the beach! We found ourselves in a series of jungle trails that branched out in every direction. Nearly every intersection we came to had at least 5 paths in front of us to choose from. The directions that we followed here had vaguely told us "eventually the main path will come to a stairwell".

We walked hours & hours, miles & miles in the humid jungle heat. Mosquitoes were eating us alive through the bug spray & we were both pouring sweet. Surrounded by immense beauty & thick jungle in every direction, we were starting to run low on water. After exploring every trail possible & still not finding the hidden beach, we decided to call it a day without finding La Playa Izquierda.

Follow the Water

On our way out of the forest & back into town, I peered to the right towards what appeared to be more a creek than a path. As I stepped over the trickling water & ducked around a tree, I saw it!!! The staircase!!!

The winding staircase hugged the canyon walls, nestled into the Earth next to a flowing creek. The concrete stairs had been almost completely overcome by a thick, green moss. The forest all around us was so totally lush & dripping with dew. With each step down the stairs, the sound of the waves becomes louder & louder.

100 Steps Later

We found ourselves at the completey desolate Playa Izquierda, not another human in site. The cove is nestled between rocky cliffs & jungle creeks. The faeries are alive & hugely present in the land here. This place is a potent energy node & has a crystal clear vibration.

Being at such a WILD place really makes one feel ALIVE & PRESENT in the body!

This place is humbling. The water was so rough that we made a clear decision to not to get in. We had ventured all day looking for a beach to jump into the water at. However, we had to respect the message that we so obviously received from the sea. The waters were rough, the undertoe was STRONG... stronger than either of us had ever felt before. What a blessing to stand before such an immense body of water, feeling its power, feeling your humanity.

Yes, I feel alive where the land meets the sea. Where all elements & directions find balance. The wild goose chase through the jungle of Costa Rica was more than well worth it, to bask in the beauty of La Playa Izquierda.
