July 1 - Today is Territory Day in the Northern Territory of Australia (this is the day when we celebrate our self governance which was achieved in 1978).

So, big deal I hear you say. Most places have some form of self recognition day. In 3 days time it's July 4th in the US which is HUGE!
Why would anyone be even remotely interested in some outback place's special day???

Because it has to be seen to be believed. This is the one day of the year when we legally get to BLOW stuff up!

Forget the organised fireworks displays - this is DIY - our Cracker Day when we all become Pyro's - Armageddon!!!

Fireworks are allowed to be sold between 9am and 9pm today only. They are only legally allowed to be set off between 6pm and 11pm tonight - like that actually happens!!!

Darwin is our Capital City but it's only a small town really, population is about 150,000.
Tonight it is estimated there will be over 300 Tons of fireworks let off in 5 hours.

The place goes Crazy!
Last year the Firefighters got called out 280 times to attend fires caused by fireworks.
At night driving visibility is reduced dramatically due to the thick haze of firework smoke engulfing the whole town.
The Hospital Emergency ward is on standby to receive all the people who are injured each year.
Today is Saturday so it's highly likely it will be a BIG one with people having the day off work and having a few drinks.

Even the NT Police have put out a warning video asking people to behave themselves - check it out.

And just to finish this post - I used to have a really nice home made timber letterbox until it fell victim to a Cracker last year - now it's a cheap boring metal one - LOL!!!

So if you're thinking of coming to Darwin for a holiday, make sure you include July 1 - it's a BLAST!

Nice pictures, following you now.

I will follow you as well. I have many Thai friends here in Australia. Darwin has many Thai people.

thanks for sharing.. I'd not heard of Territory Day. But July seems a good time to go to NT :)

Hopefully I survive the action tonight? It's 3pm here and we're already getting bombed!

Great pictures, I’m following you now.

I followed you back. You seem to share similar viewpoints to me.
