Destinations of the Southwest- Navajo Lake

There is something exquisitely beautiful about a lake in the middle of the desert. A deep blue expanse paralleling the endless blue of desert sky. Navajo Lake is one of these gorgeous places.

Nestled along the Colorado border in the northern portion of New Mexico, lies the state’s second largest lake. Navajo Lake is a designated state park that offers camping and water adventures all while showcasing the unique beauty of this area. The lake is actually man made, having been created by a damn on the San Juan River. Although the park is a popular camping and day trip spot, there is no shortage of shoreline, and you will have no problem finding a spot to enjoy Navajo Lake.

The state park features two marinas and two visitors centers, as it spans two states. The steep, rocky hillsides of Navajo Lake are covered in an abundance of juniper, mesquite, and pinon trees. The New Mexico state flower, the yucca, is also heavily featured at the lake. Navajo Lake is a desert oasis where you may spot many types of animals, such as elk, bald eagles, lizards, falcons, and mule deer.

A gorgeous destination, great for fishing, boating, or just lounging in the sun near the water. The surrounding area is so lovely, it makes the drive in as worthwhile as the trip.
