24 Hours in Albuquerque

in #travel6 years ago

If you find yourself with 24 hours to kill in Albuquerque, New Mexico, you’re in luck. This city is the heart of The Land of Enchantment, and within its borders you'll find it is bursting with culture, entertainment, and more delicious food than you can possibly eat in one day. Stick with our 1 day plan, and you’ll be sure to enjoy your time in the vibrant metropolis of Albuquerque.

Breakfast
You’ll want to start your day in Duke City with a delicious breakfast from The Grove Cafe. Breaking Bad fans will recognize it as the go-to meeting place for Madrigal’s notorious Lydia, but Albuquerque natives know The Grove as a chic spot to enjoy perfect pancakes and a mimosa. While you’re there, check out their delightful market. There you’ll find local and artisan treats to take home as gifts, or keep all for yourself.

After breakfast, take a leisurely stroll through the ABQ BioPark Botanical Garden. You’ll be amazed at the acres of lush gardens in the middle of the Chihuahuan desert. Some of the gardens are whimsical, others romantic, some are historical; all of the Garden is beautiful. Admission includes access to the aquarium, which showcases native marine habitats from the Rio Grande to the Gulf of Mexico, an impressive stingray exhibit, and a coral reef recreation.

Lunch
No visit to Albuquerque is complete without a trip to the one and only Frontier Restaurant. Located across from the University of New Mexico, The Frontier is a local tradition. A favorite for all people from all walks of life, you will find a diverse mix of town folks enjoying the mouthwatering, regional favorites in their eclectic cafeteria setting. Try the famous sweet roll with a glass of their fresh squeezed orange juice. If you're looking for something more savory, their menu showcases delectable New Mexican food, from tacos, enchiladas and tostadas to burritos, nachos, and posole. Whatever you order, don’t skimp on the Hatch green chile. It’s as much a New Mexico institution as The Frontier Restaurant.

After lunch, take yourself to the northern side of the city to visit the Anderson Abruzzo International Balloon Museum. As the hot air balloon capital of the world, Albuquerque boasts a gorgeously built museum full of all the secrets and knowledge of this aeronautic sport. Enjoy the unique structure of building from the outside, where you are also offered a stunning view of the Sandia Mountains. Ballooning not your thing? Albuquerque is home to many fascinating museums, including the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, and the American International Rattlesnake museum. The lemonade is fresh squeezed in house daily, and the brownies, with or without walnuts, make a divine desert.

Nightlife
Home to a bustling nightlife, you can choose from a few locations to bar-hop, whether it be the stylish Uptown, the characteristic Nob Hill, or the quintessential Downtown. Grab an Alibi, the local alternative weekly paper and take your pick of any musical or theatrical performances that are bound to be playing on any given night. Travelling with dogs? Many of the local breweries consider themselves dog friendly, such as La Cumbre or Tractor Brewing Co. Or bring your (well-behaved) furry friend to Anodyne, a charismatic pool hall that welcomes dogs to it’s plant-filled, second story bar.

Wow, the first time I heard about Albuquerque, I had a bad impression. I don't stay in the US so I don't know so much. Well, this ain't bad. The place worth visiting. Thanks for changing my perspective @pinkspectre

My sister is going on a trip to Albuquerque in a week and she's been wondering what to do while she's there. I sent her a link to this post!
