Discovering the Stella Maris Carmelite Lighthouse and Monastery in Haifa Israel

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Dome of Stella Maris Carmelite Monastery in Haifa Israel.

The Stella Maris Carmelite Monastery, is a 19th-century monastery located on the slopes of Mount Carmel.

Colorful paintings on the dome, done by Brother Luigi Poggi 1924-28, depict episodes from the Old Testament, the most dramatic being the scene of Elijah swept up in a chariot of fire.  Other scenes of David strings his harp, the prophet Isaiah, the Holy Family and the Four Evangelists are also in dramatic grand style.

Latin inscriptions of biblical verses are written around the roofed dome.

The symbol of the Order is mounted above the entrance to the monastery.

A symbol of a cross on top of Mount Carmel and above it, the sword of Elijah followed by this inscription: "I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts."

1 Kings 19:14

"And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away."

An embossment consisting of the image of Elijah lifting up his sword with the torch of faith at its tip is incorporated into the entrance door.

According to Jewish tradition, this is the cave and tomb of Elijah the prophet.

The stone in this cave was believed to be the bedrock on which Elijah has slept.

2 Kings 2:23-25

"And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.  And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.  And he went from thence to mount Carmel, and from thence he returned to Samaria."

The statue of the Virgin Mary carrying Jesus on her knees.

The statue is called "Our mistress the Carmel" and is porcelain and carved from the cedars of Lebanon.

Today the monastery in Stella Maris and its church are a popular visiting place for tourists and pilgrims. It is adjacent to the vista point that overlooks on the bay of Haifa in Israel.
