Garrison Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul
Garrison Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, known in Lviv as a Jesuit church, built in the early Baroque style at the beginning of the XVII century. The temple is an example of a Roman shrine Church of the Gesù and is considered one of the most iconic buildings of the city.
In Lviv Jesuits arrived in 1584, and already in 1590 there was the first wooden church of the Society of Jesus at the site near the western part of the city's defensive walls, where Jesuit gate was arranged. Work on the construction of the current temple of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul began in 1610. In the period 1618-1621 gg. He supervised the construction of the Jesuit Order architect Giacomo Briano.
1624 consecrated the first side chapel of St.. Benedict. In 1630 the church was completed and consecrated by the Archbishop of Lviv Jan Andrzej Pruhnitskim. As a result of the construction of the shrine was the length - 41 m, width - 22.5 m, height - 26 m.
1702 to fit the project Martin bell tower was built, which was the highest tower in Lviv (about one hundred meters), which in 1754 set the clock. After the liquidation of the Jesuit Order in 1773 the temple began to serve as a military garrison church.
Significant damage to the temple also suffered during the two World Wars.
