Hungary must visit places : 1) Wencheim Castle at Szabadkígyós

in #travel7 years ago

The Wenckheim Castle in Szabadkígyós is one of the most beautiful, old-style buildings, which survived the world wars and remained in good condition at southeast Hungary. The magnificent mansion was marveled in 1879 when it was finished. The castle was built by one of the wealthiest landlords of the 1870s, the Wenckheims, Count Frigyes Wenckheim and his wife, Krisztina Wenckheim. Miklós Ybl was commissioned to prepare the castle's plans. The Countess wanted Ybl to design a mansion with as many windows as many days a year, as many rooms as many as weeks, as many entrances as many months, and as many wings of the building as the seasons. The result became unique throughout the world.
The seemingly discerning quest for a fairy tale was not taken by Miklós Ybl, who created one of the most modern and beautiful castle with 365 windows, 52 rooms, 12 entrances and 4 buildings. The two towers of the eclectic, neo-renaissance mansion rise above the trees surrounding the building. At a height of 40 meters there is a terrace with a great view of the surrounding area.
