My Travel Diary - Hampi - The Historical City of Karnataka (India)

Hampi is also called as temple town in Karnataka. It is one of the amazing and beautiful historical sites of ancient age in the world. Hampi was capital city of famous Vijayanagara Empire located on the bank of Tungabhadra River.

Because of the ruins of the temples and monuments and other structures of Vijayanagar, dating back to 1500 AD, is the main attraction of this place, and is attracting many tourists far from places.

Hampi is covered from mountains of rocks like Anjaneya, Malyavanta and Matanga Hills.

According to Ramayana, it was believed that Hampi was kingdom of monkeys before Vijayanagara Empire in pre-ancient age (around 1 CE) when the city was known as Kishkindha.

Hampi is rich in its culture and architecture. Hampi is selected as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. The Virupaksha Car Festival (Mar/Apr) is a major religious festival, with a procession bearing a giant wooden chariot along the main street. The Hampi Festival, known locally as Vijaya Utsav

Attractions & Tourist spots in Hampi are main temple Virupaksha Temple (2nd image in the post), Vittala Temple, Hemakuta, Kadalekalu Ganesha, Krishna Temple, Lakshmi Narasimha, Queen’s bath, Lotus Mahal, Hazara Rama Temple and more.

Most of the visitors to Hampi arrive at the well connected Hospet Junction railway station, located about 13km from Hampi. Hospet town also has a bus station.
