Beauties of Yucatan: the enchanting cenote of Yax-Kin

in #travel2 years ago (edited)

Hi there my Steemit friends and followers!

I am here with another episode of my Beauties of Yucatan series. This time around, I will take you to another amazing Yucatan cenote - the cenote of Yax-Kin.

Now if you have read some of my previous posts of the series, you probably know what a cenote is but let me explain this term again for those who are not familiar with it. Cenote is basically a sinkhole that formed naturally after a limestone bedrock above it collapsed. There are more than 6,000 cenotes just on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, many of which have been opened to public.

Hidden in the Yucatan jungle, near the higway connecting the towns of Playa del Carmen and Tulum on the famous Mayan Riviera (the exact location is marked in the Steemit World Map), the Yax-Kin Cenote is one of the less known cenotes, which comes with a great benefit - it is not crowded as some of the most popular cenotes of the area such as Dos Ojos, Ik-Kil, Azul, Eden etc.

The Yax-Kin Cenote has a very comfortable, shallow entrance and incredibly clear and calm water, allowing you to see through it all the way to the bottom. The cenote is home to numerous fish so make sure to bring your snorkeling gear not to miss out on the spectacular underwater world of this place.

As you can see in the photos, the cenote is nicely shaded by the surrounding lush vegetation so there is no need to bring sun screen but if you still want to have some with you, be sure it contains only natural and biodegradable ingredients as the ecosystem of the cenote is very fragile and any chemicals can cause serious damage to it. Bug spray is another thing you can leave at home - we were not bothered by mosquitoes or any other insects in the cenote.

The cenote is open every day from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM and the admission fee is 100 Mexican pesos for adults and 60 Mexican pesos for kids (which is a very good price for such a beautiful cenote). We visited Yax-Kin on Tuesday and we had the whole cenote just for ourselves for almost 2 hours before another small group of people arrived. This is something you will never get to experience in the most famous Yucatan cenotes for sure.

All of the above featured photos of the Yax-Kin Cenote were taken by me. I will take my underwater camera with me next time so that I can show you what the aquatic life and the underwater landscape of this extraordinary place look like :)
