Beauties of Yucatan: lush greenery of the mangroves
Hi there my Steemit friends and followers!
Have you heard of the mangroves yet? These vividly green shrubs or small trees can be found in tropical and subtropical regions all over the world and they actually make some of the most interesting and important ecosystems on Earth so I decided to dedicate my today´s post to them.
I recently visited a beautiful cenote hidden in the jungle just outside of Tulum here on the Mayan Riviera and it was surrounded by these astonishing forests of mangroves. The cenote is called Yaxchen and it actually looks more like a lake than a typical cenote (cenote is basically a sinkhole that formed naturally after a limestone bedrock above it collapsed). I will definitely write a separate post about the Yaxchen Cenote later but for today, let me stick just to the mangroves.
You can walk through the mangroves on this shaky wooden footpath that winds around the lush vegetation for hundreds of meters.
But what makes the mangroves so important? Well, there are many reasons. The mangroves provide natural habitat for an incredible variety of animals - from fish, crustaceans and amphibians to turtles, crocodiles and birds.
With their remarkably dense and complex network of (partly underwater) roots, the trees also serve as a very efficient water filter, trapping all kinds of pollutants and sediments, thus protecting fragile ecosystems such as coral reefs. Humans mostly value the mangroves for their ability to protect coastal areas from natural disasters like hurricanes, floods, water erosion etc.
As you can see, the mangroves are truly amazing plants and it is very important to take care of them as they are vital for health of coastal landscape.
All of the photos featured in this post were taken by me in and around the Yaxchen Cenote.
