Visiting Newcastle New South Wales Australia

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Dear stemmit community

This post is talking a day trip three hours drive by bus to the north of Sydney. The location is Newcastle the second largest city in New South Wales. The Greater Newcastle is famous for its harbour and its coal mining.

Basically my visit consisted in walking along the coastal, enjoy the beautiful day warmer than I expected. it was June so I was supposed to be in autumn while the winter was coming.

Walking untill the top of the hill which is situated the Fort Scratchley a marittime centre of defence during the second world war.

Inside there is a report of the conflict between Australian army and the Japanese one. (To be honest before visiting this fort I did not know that some battles happened also in this area)

Some witness of the live inside the fort

Outside the plaques on stones show how the fort managed the defence from any threats.

Close to this coach station ( (between bond street and wall street) I found this building in the following photo

Firstly I thought was a church. When I came closer I had realized that it was a restaurant not a religious building. Also I did not know that its design is in the Italianate Renaissance Revival built by a local colonial architect in the end 19th century.

The following photo was taken from the park with the obelisk. It is the oldest navigational marker and built in the 19th century situated in a small hill.

Thanks for sharing your travels. I haven't done much travelling in NSW.
On the subject of WW2 and the Japs, have you heard of the "Brisbane Line?"
It was an imaginary line drawn up to concede the northern part of the Australian continent to the Japs in case of an invasion.

Thanks for your comment ! Yes but I did not know that before visiting that fort. Another reason why that trip was very interesting

I am so jealous, did you visit New Zealand too?

Unfortunately I was unable to visit New Zeland. Does your country have an agreement with Australia and /or New Zeland for working holiday visa?

For Australia we need visa, but for NZ we don't need it!

I think we need also for NZ working holiday visa and it is not possible to extend it one extra year like the Australian whv. It is a shame to not have been In NZ. Another reason to go back to Southern Pacific.
