Basilica Cistern / Istanbul

Basilica Cistern was built in 532 and commissioned by Emperor Justinian. The largest surviving Byzantine Cistern in İstanbul, was constructed using 336 columns. Its symmetry and sheer grandeur of conception are wonderful, and its cavernous depths make a great retreat especially on summer days.
