Rocky Mountains and lakes in Dubai? We have that too!

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

When you think of Dubai you probably imagine futuristic skyscrapers, palms, sand and man-made islands. But if you take time to explore the whole Emirate of Dubai, you can find a lot more.

A good hour and a half out of the city you can find Al Hajar Mountains, translated to the Rocky Mountains.

The name says it all, they really are nothing but rocks. Little vegetation and the highest peaks are over 2000m tall. They are a popular weekend destination mostly just for driving through - there are some hiking paths but you don't see many hikers. With temperatures above 30 degrees throughout most of the year and few hiking trails, this is no surprise.

Hatta is a town in the Emirate of Dubai that is known for its dam where people come for kayakig and boating. No bikinis though, as you can see on the photo.

Motor boats are also not allowed and the only jet ski on the lake belongs to the rescue team so you can imagine how peaceful and quiet this place is - especially when you compare it to the city buzz.

While kayaking, you can watch birds like swallows and herons. Unfortunately they were too fast for my camera.

Hatta is a good place for the history lovers too. There is a heritage village that you can visit for free if you want to learn about everyday life of the locals. But let's save that for the next post.

As you mentioned before I didn't know you have mountains too. I think I even don't need to go to Dubai, 'cause you are telling us all the interesting and beautiful things to see there. I will definitely wait for more of your posts! ;)

Nice place ! I think it's good to get away from the city from time to time, and in Dibainthis looks like the place to go . And you are right this is not what you imagine when you think of Dubai . All places have hidden treasures

thanks for sharing @Penticton, Dubai looks like an interesting place to visit, though Penticton, BC is closer for me and has a beauty all of its own.
