MY BEST EXPERIENCE/VACATION
This is my entry for a contest by @bigdeej on the topic: MY BEST EXPERIENCE/VACATION
Vacation is a period of time when somebody takes a break form school or work and travels for rest, recreation, recess or holiday. A vacation is a period of happiness and immense joy and most people spend everyday of their life anticipating the moment they will finally go on vacation. Vacation is cherished by all classes of people, the old and young alike.
As a student, I don't get to have this often. So when I finally get one, I don't let it slide away in vain. I've had several good vacations but my best one was between 15th to 18th March, 2018.
I chose Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. Why did I chose Calabar? Because it is called "The People's Paradise." Who doesn't love a Paradise?
Albeit a short one, it was a well-planned vacation. I didn't go alone but with many colleagues of mine. We nearly missed our flight but I'm glad we pulled through. We reached our destination at about 13:00 GMT. We came outsude to take photos after dropping our bags inside the hotel.
This is my best shot
This came out even better
And this, a clean one
We checked in our hotel and had a good meal.
We just wanted to rest after such a long journey on air. So some of us slept while others played various games in the hotel's game room. Still others, like me were busy fiddling with their phone all day. It was the first day and all we wanted to do was rest. The night sleep was absolutely wonderful as there was electricity all night and our skin was hit by the full power of a a split unit air conditioner. We decided to share a singlr room to minimize the expenses. We rather chanelled much of the funds to eating and merriment making.
On the second day, we decided to visit Marina Resort, a recreational centre built by the bank of a Popular riber called Calabar River.
Here we had mad fun and the view was priceless
I will never get tired of this picture. We had many bottles of Orijin which happens to be a very popular beer in Nigeria. Something exceptional about this beer is that contrary to other beers which taste bitter, it has an irresistible sweet taste in a unique romanve with the taste of the mixture of roots from which it is made.
I woudn't trade the peace I experienced here for anything.
This is a platform for people to enter or drop off from ships and boats to walk to the bank of the river. From this point, travellers can travel to Oron, Akwa Ibom State and even to Cameroun, a neigbouring country to Nigeria.
We paid to have a boat ride
Yes, we had a boat ride. It was amazing. It was my first experience and the driver was very nice.
We arrived a small island called "Iyata Island". What is written here is: "Welcome to Iyata Island". We were told that Mary Slessor, a Catholic missionary from United States who is known for stopping the killing of twins in Nigeria stayed in this Island with the first pair of twins she rescued from being killed; Henshaw and Duke. We were showed the house where she stayed. Prior to her visit, twins were usually killed because they were believed to bring bad fortune to the land.
Soon we were back to the shore and we saw this local fisherman fishing with hook and line. He would attach a bait on the hook and dip it inside the water holding the stick and waiting patiently to see the floater shake which would indicate that he had a catch.
He actually caught some in my presence and the sight was spine-chilling.
I took some nice selfies
Another one
And another one
And other one
We also ate plenty of meat
Beef
Goat
Chicken
We ate eggs and plantain.!
And at the end we were ready to go back.
This experience was priceless because I had a lot of fun and I learnt so many new things. It has been my best experience so far and I will not forget it in a hurry.
