SPEKE RESORT MUNYONYO, KAMPALA, UGANDA - PART 1
Introduction
I attended the just concluded 35th Conference of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA).The Conference was held at the Speke Resort, Munyonyo about 14 kilometres from Kampala in Uganda. This post is not about the Conference per se but about the social aspects and the beauty of the Speke Resort built on the shores of Lake Victoria on a 90 acre land estate. The breeze from the Lake is so soothing. You need to be there to experience it.
I was told that the Resort hosted the Presidents and Prime Ministers who attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in 2007 hence the name Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort as depicted in the photograph below.
The Opening Ceremony of the Conference
Participants were treated to the rich Ugandan cultural displays as we moved to the Conference venue. The following photographs depict some of these displays.
Here I was at the Conference Centre waiting for the commencement of activities.
THE CULTURAL NIGHT
Every participant was expected to dress in his/her native attire. Consequently, yours sincerely was adorned in the full Yoruba traditional wear buba, iro and aso-oke gele and ipele.
Each participating country was heralded to the dancing floor with a familiar music. Here you have some countries that were represented at the cultural night.
Ghana
Netherlands
Swaziland
United Kingdom
Nigeria
Waiting for the show to begin
Singing a song in honour of Nigeria titled "Ilu Mi"
The Song
"Ilu mi, ilu mi, Ilu Nigeria
O dara o lewa, ilu to tobi
Ibikibi ti mo lewa lorile aiye
Emi ko le gbagbe ilu Nigeria"!!!
Now to the translation
My country, my country, Country Nigeria
Its nice, its beautiful, a big country
Anywhere I am in the world
I will never forget my country Nigeria!!!
UGANDA, OUR HOST
This concludes the first part of the Speke Resort experience.
Look out for the second part which is on the boat cruise on Lake Victoria, the second largest fresh water lake in the world.
