Las Fiestas del Pilar

In Zaragoza every year on October the 12th the city comes alive for the celebration of her patron saint, the virgen of pilar which is a religious reference to the apparition of Mary to certain saints.

According to locals the city has celebrated El Pilar going back to the 12th century but didn't become an official spanish holiday til the 1980's.

One of the main attractions of the festival is the pyramid of roses built in the plaza every year next to the truly impressive Basilica del Pilar.
