Prague: A city from fairy tales
Franz Kafka´s home, bohemian life and beer. It is possible to find it all in this mystic city. As a modern day nomad, who has been moving around a lot in the past 12 years, Prague has always been one of my favorite. About 28 million foreign tourists visit this city every year, and if you haven`t been there yet, make sure to add it on the top of your list.
The city centre is pretty much the area between Vaclavske Street and Prague Castle. Most tourists start to walk from Statue of Saint Wenceslas on Vaclavske Street(Václavské náměstí), take a break in front of the Astronomical Clock(Old Town Square), cross the famous Charles Bridge and walk all the way up to the Prague Castle. I have spent 3 years in this beautiful city and these long walks were always my favorite thing to do, especially on rainy, dark days. It feels like those countless number of sculptures greet you while you cross the charles bridge.
Prague is relatively cheap. If you are going to have a break, make sure to stay away from the places on Old Town Square, it´s very pricy due to crowded tourists, instead try restaurants on backstreets . There are countless of choices and most of them are as good as places around the Astronomical clock. For example, Havelska street can be a good choice. There is a nice pizzeria called Corto, and you can watch the local market on the street while eating great italian pizza with a glass of wine. If you want to try local food, they also offer goulash which is worth trying.
My favorite restarunt is Peklo. It is probably one of the most unusual restaurant in the world. Peklo means "hell" in Czech language. It is located inside a cave, therefore the atmosphere is amazing. It makes you feel like you are suddenly back in medieval times. By the way, I should mention that it is very romantic place for couples.
The clock is the third oldest Astronomical clock in the world. It was first installed in the beginning of 15th century. Figures around the clock represent four things that were despised at the time of the clock's making. These are vanity, greed, death and pleasure. The vanity is represented with the first figure which is a man admiring himself in the mirror, then there is the miser holding a bag of gold for vanity, a skeleton for death and finally last figure playing musical instrument representing pleasure.
Since there is a museum or a historical building in almost every street corner, you will not have enough time to visit them all, therefore I just want to share a few of my favorite ones. Of course Prague Castle is the first. Make sure to visit it both in the day and evening. I think it looks even better in the night.
The St. Vitus Cathedral is a gothic bulding and once you step inside, you get amazed with the size of it, and silver tomb of saint John of Nepomuk is simply breathtaking. You will find another statue of him on Charles Bridge where tourists touch the cross and the stars with their left hands and make a wish. He is a saint of Bohemia who was drowned in the Vltava river because refused to divulge the secrets of the queen´s confession.
Nightlife is very promising as well in Prague. Karlovy Lazne is the largest nightclub in Central Europe. The club is 5 floors and they offer different music style on each floor. It is definitely worth visiting. The club is right next to Charles Bridge. If you want to go to more local places, I can recommend Bombay coctail bar or Mecca club. Bombay is very central, but for Mecca you will need to use public transport. Then again, drinks are reasonably cheap .

Prague: Masallardan bir sehir
Bohem hayat, bira ve Franz Kafka´nin evi, hepsini bu mistik sehirde bulmak mumkun. Son 12 yildir surekli ulke degistiren bir modern zaman gocebesi olarak, Prag her zaman en sevdigim sehirlerden biri olmustur. Yilda yaklasik 28 milyon yabanci turist bu sehri ziyaret etmeye geliyor ve eger henuz gormediyseniz, seyahat listenizin basina eklemenizi tavsiye ederim.
Sehir merkezi yaklasik olarak Vaclavske caddesi ile Prague kalesi arasindaki bolge. Bircok turist Vaclavske meydaninin basindaki Aziz Wenceslas heykelinin onunden yurumeye basliyor, Astronomik saatin onunde mola veriyor, unlu Karl koprusunden gecip en yukaridaki Prag kalesina kadar cikiyor. Bu guzel sehirde gecirdigim 3 yil boyunca yapmaktan en cok zevk aldigim aktivite bu yuruyusler oldu, ozellikle yagmurlu ve puslu gunlerde. Koprunun uzerindeki heykeller yuruyusunuz boyunca sizi selamliyormus gibi hissediyorsunuz.
Prag diger avrupa sehirlerine oranla nispeten daha ucuz. Merkezde yemek yemek veya birseyler icmek icin mola verirseniz saatin onundeki mekanlardan uzak durmanizda fayda var. Kalabalik turist alani olmasi nedeniyle fiyatlar oldukca yuksek olabiliyor. Bunun yerine biraz arka sokaklarda, en az merkezdekeki mekanlar kadar guzel olan sayisiz restoran var. Mesela Havelska sokagini deneyebilirsiniz. Corto adinda guzel bir pizzaci bulunuyor burada. Harika italyan pizzanizi yiyip, sarabinizi yudumlarken sokaktaki unlu yerel marketi izleyebilirsiniz. Eger yerel yemekleri denemek isterseniz, burada unlu gulas yemegini de cok guzel yapiyorlar.
Benim bu sehirdeki favori mekanim ise Peklo. Bence dunyadaki en sira disi restoranlardan biri burasi. Peklo Cek dilinde "cehennem" anlamina geliyor. Mekan bir magaranin icine kurulmus, bu nedenle paha bicilemez bir atmosfere sahip. Size bir anda sanki orta caga donmusunuz hissi veriyor. Bu arada mekanin ciftler icin cok romantik oldugunun notunu da duseyim.
Merkezdeki saat dunyanin en eski ucuncu Astronomik saati. Ilk kez 15. yuzyilin baslarinda yerlestirilmis. Saattin etrafindaki figurler o donemdeki 4 insan tipini simgeliyor. Bunlar kibir, ac gozluluk, olum ve bohem hayat. Kibir elindeki aynada kendisine hayran sekilde bakan adam ile simgeleniyor. Ac gozluluk yine bir baska adamin elindeki bir kese altin ile, olum bir iskelet figuru ile ve bohem hayat elindeki calgi aletiyle kaygisiz mutlulugu simgeleyen figur ile anlatilmis.
Neredeyse her sokak basinda bir muze veya tarihi yapi oldugu icin, bu konuda cok fazla birsey soylemeye gerek yok. Zaten hepsini gormeniz neredeyse imkansiz. Bunun yerine benim favorim olan bir iki yeri paylasmak istiyorum. Tabi ki Prag kalesi bunlarin ilki. Kaleyi hem gunduz gozuyle gorun hemde hava karardiktan sonra ziyaret edin. Bence aksam karanliginda cok daha buyuleyici oluyor.
Kalenin icindeki Aziz Vitus katedrali gotik bir yapi, iceriye adiminizi attiginizda gercekten hayrete dusuyorsunuz buyuklugu karsisinda ve Aziz John Nepomuk´un gumus mezari gercekten gorulmeye deger. John Nepomuk`un daha unlu olan diger heykeli Karl koprusu uzerinde. Zaten etrafi en kalabalik olan bu heykeli, turistlerin sol ellerini heykelin uzerindeki hac uzerine koayarak dilek dilemesinden farkedebilirsiniz. Bu aziz, bohemia doneminde kralicenin gunah cikarma sirasinda paylastigi sirlari krala anlatmayi reddettigi icin nehirde bogdurulma hikayesi ile biliniyor.
Gece hayati da oldukca guzel Prag´da. Sehirdeki gece kulubu Karlovy Lazne, orta avrupanin en buyuk mekani olarak biliniyor. 5 katli olan devasa kulup her katta farkli bir muzik tarzi sunuyor eglenmeye gelenlere. Gece hayati sevenlerin kesinlikle ziyaret etmesi gereken bir mekan. Kulub hemen merkezde, Karl koprusunu yaninda. Eger daha yerel bir mekan ariyorsaniz, Bombay ve Mecca´yi da oneririm. Bombay yine merkezde, eski sehir meydanindaki saatin hemen arka tarafinda, fakat Mecca icin toplu tasima ile onceden bir plan yapmaniz gerekiyor, zira merkezin biraz disinda kaliyor. Gece mekanlarindaki fiyatlarin cok pahali olmadigini tekrar belirteyim.

İlk yurt dışı deneyimimi Prag'da yapmıştım ve iyiki öyle olmuş. Mutlaka görülmesi gereken şehirlerden birisi bana göre. Ama öyle 1-2 günlüğüne değil. En az 1 hafta kalın. Turist gibi değil de oranın yerlisi gibi yaşayıp, gezmek çok zevkli.
