Two Icelandic buildings

in #travel9 years ago

In Reykjavik two buildings stand out between the more pittoresque houses.
First and tallest is the Hallgrímskirkja church,

Designed by Gudjon Samuel in 1937, who was often inspired by the shapes and forms created when lava cools into basalt rock.

Construction of the church began in 1945 and ended in 1986.
The statue in front of the church is a representation of Leifur Eiriksson 970-1020, the first European to discover America.

The pipe organ was designed and constructed by the German organ builder Johannes Klais of Bonn, it weighs 25 tons.

The other building i would like to mention is the Reykjavik concert hall, Harpa, both buildings can be seen on this picture.

As with many things in Iceland, the coloured glass was inspired by the basalt landscapes.

The building was completed in 2011, designed by the Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects in co-operation with Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson.

In 2013, the building won the European Union’s Mies van der Rohe award for contemporary architecture.
